Clemons was a three time All-American wrestler for the Bronchos.  He placed third in the AAU national tournament in 1934 and was second in that meet in 1935 as Central finished runner-up in the team race.

Clemons captured the NCAA Division I national title as a senior in the 1936 the Bronchos again finished second in the nation, and the following summer he made the United States Olympic team at 191 pounds.

“Duke” finished fifth in the 1936 Olympics, held in Germany that year, and he remains the only Broncho athlete to ever participate in the Olympic Games.
