The 1982 Central football team went 10-2 and claimed the NAIA National Championship. The Bronchos won the final seven games of the season, capping it all off with a 14-11 win over Colorado Mesa at Wantland Stadium to win the school's second national title.

The Bronchos had 11 players earn All-District 9 honors that season, seven of them were named to the First Team.  Daric Zeno (First Team) and Randy Page (Second Team) were also named NAIA All-American while Rod Davis, Ron Mackey, Steven McKeaver and John Preston earned Honorable Mention honors.

The 1982 football team to this day ranks as one of the best football teams in school history, with numbers put up 35 years ago still standing among the best today. UCO ranks in the top-10 in school history in eight different categories – touchdown passes in a single game and in a season, passing yards in a single game and in a season, as well as receiving yards, individual offense, all-purpose yards, tackles, and sacks in one season.

The Bronchos averaged 31.2 points per game that season, going 7-2 in the regular season before reeling off a 61-20 win over Colorado State-Pueblo in the first round of the playoffs, a 28-17 win over rival-Northeastern State in the second round, and the three-point victory in the national championship game.
