Bill Mitchell enjoyed a phenomenal three-year wrestling career at 177 pounds after coming to UCO shortly after the Bronchos re-instated the program following a long hiatus.

He captured the NAIA national championship as a sophomore in 1973-74 to cap a 27-2 season, then came back and was 31-6 as the national runner-up in 1974-75.

Mitchell made the finals in two divisions as a senior in 1975-76, finishing as the NAIA runner-up while winning the NCAA Division II national crown as UCO competed as dual members that season.

He had a 34-3 record as a senior and finished his career with an amazing 92-11-0 record, a remarkable .893 winning percentage that still ranks as the best in UCO’s storied wrestling history.  Mitchell was elected to the NAIA wrestling Hall of Fame in 1981.
