Bronchos Drop Tough Twinbill

EDMOND (April 10) – Two spirited comebacks fell short for Central Oklahoma Friday afternoon at Wendell Simmons Field as the Bronchos dropped a pair of tough decisions to Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association leader Missouri Southern.

UCO nearly overcame a 6-0 deficit in the opener before falling 6-4 and the Bronchos dropped a 7-6 extra-inning heart-breaker in the second game after rallying from an early 5-0 hole.

"Baseball is a game of opportunity and timing," head coach Dax Leone said.  "Our kids fought all day and unfortunately came up on the wrong end of it today.

"We tell them all the time to stick to the system and compete as a unit, which they did.  You don't forget those type of games, especially if you lose.  Baseball is a players game and we'll get back at it tomorrow."

UCO fell to 16-20 overall and 11-15 in the league with the two losses, while the Lions improved to 28-8 and 19-4.  The teams wrap up the four-game series with a single nine-inning contest at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

The Bronchos trailed 6-0 after five innings in the first game before getting back in the game in the sixth when Isaac Hellbusch walked, Jake O'Brien singled and Dylan Tinkler followed with a homer run to right that made it 6-3.

Tinkler had another big hit in the seventh with an RBI single that pulled UCO within 6-4 and left runners on second and third, but an infield pop out ended the threat and the game.

Tinkler, Tyler Hatcher and Jacob Borrego had two hits apiece to lead the offense.

MSSU jumped out to a big 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning in the nightcap before Dennis Morelli and Jared Fowler came on to pitch and shut the Lions down for the next five innings.

The Bronchos chipped away at the deficit, getting an RBI single from Borrego in the third before making it 5-3 on Tinkler's lead-off solo homer and Chris Lobato's run-scoring single.

UCO pulled even in the fifth as Tinkler belted a two-run homer and Lobato's RBI hit in the bottom of the sixth gave the Bronchos a 6-5 advantage.

MSSU tied it with a one-out solo homer in the top of the seventh and it stayed deadlocked at 6-all until the Lions broke the tie in the top of the 10th with two walks, a hit batter, a balk and a sacrifice fly.

UCO had plenty of chances to win the game, but left one runner on in the seventh, three in the eighth, two in the ninth and two more in the 10th.

Tinkler had three of UCO's 11 hits, while Borrego and Lobato had two hits apiece.
