Late Rally Lifts UCO Past Lions

EDMOND (April 11) – Clutch relief outings by Nick Sornsin and Rande Revilla kept Central Oklahoma in the game and set up a late-game rally that propelled the Bronchos past Missouri Southern 11-9 Saturday afternoon at soggy Wendell Simmons Field.

Sornsin and Revilla combined to allow just one hit and one run in seven innings of work as UCO battled back from an 8-4 deficit to take the win in earning a split of the four-game series with the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association-leading Lions.  The Bronchos improved to 17-20 on the season and 12-15 in the league while dropping MSSU to 28-9 and 19-5.

"Baseball is a players game and our kids really competed well all weekend," head coach Dax Leone said.  "We didn't always execute, but that's a really good Missouri Southern club we played.  I thought offensively overall we had a solid weekend and our kids are looking forward to competing again next weekend."

The Bronchos trailed 8-4 after the top of the third and were down 9-5 after five innings before beginning their late comeback.

UCO scored three times in the sixth to get close as Tyler Hatcher had a two-run single through the right side and Chris Lobato scored on a passed ball, with another three-run outburst in the seventh putting the Bronchos in front.

Lobato started that frame with a lead-off single and Jacob Borrego walked before both advanced on a wild pitch.  Isaac Hellbusch gave the Bronchos the lead for good with a two-run single to right and Jake O'Brien followed with an RBI hit up the middle that made it 11-9.

MSSU didn't threaten in its final two at bats as Revilla finished off a dominating three-inning stint on the mound.  The junior left-hander struck out four and didn't allow a hit while throwing 23 strikes in 27 pitches to earn the win, his first of the season.

Sornsin was equally as impressive after coming on in the third, giving up just one hit and one run while fanning four in four innings.

O'Brien had three of UCO's 13 hits in the contest, with Hellbusch, Hatcher and Dilon Argo adding two each.  Hellbusch finished with five RBI, belting a three-run homer in the first inning to go along with his game-winning hit in the seventh.

The Bronchos return to conference action next weekend with a four-game series at Pittsburg State.
