UCO Drops Two Tough Ones

EDMOND (March 8) – Central Oklahoma failed to hang onto a pair of early-game leads in dropping a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association doubleheader to Emporia State Sunday afternoon at Wendell Simmons Field.

The Bronchos were up 2-0 in both games before losing 6-3 in the opener and 4-2 in the nightcap.  The teams finish the four-game series Monday with a 12 p.m. single contest.

"Baseball is the ultimate game about the execution of the players on both sides of the ball," head coach Dax Leone said.  "We have been close a lot, but need someone to make that big play to get us over the hump.

"I thought our players competed really well today, but ultimately we have two more loses after the games.  It's frustrating for them but someone has to make plays."

UCO broke a scoreless tie in the third inning of the first game when Josh Ingram had a one-out single and Isaac Hellbusch followed with a long home run to center field.

That 2-0 lead held up until the fifth when the Hornets pushed across three runs with the help of two errors.

The Bronchos tied it at 3-3 in the bottom of that frame when Ingram tripled and Jake O'Brien drove him in with a single to right field, but ESU came back with two runs in the top of the sixth.

The Hornets made it 6-3 in the top of the seventh and UCO couldn't answer back in its final at bat.

It was more of the same in the second game as the Bronchos scored twice in their initial at bat.

Hellbusch started a one-out rally with a single and then stole second before scoring on Dylan Tinkler's base hit, with Dylan Raper adding an RBI single to make it 2-0.

ESU scored once in the fourth and once in the fifth to tie it and then took the lead with a two-out, two-run single in the top of the seventh.

Jacob Borrego and Tinkler both singled in UCO's final at bat, but the Bronchos couldn't push across the tying runs.

Tinkler, Argo and Ethan Elroy each had two hits to lead a 10-hit attack for the Bronchos.
