Homers Help UCO Earn Split

EDMOND (Feb. 20) – Dylan Tinkler's first-inning grand slam sparked Central Oklahoma to a big lead and the Bronchos went on to topple Nebraska-Kearney 8-3 in the second game of a doubleheader Friday afternoon at Wendell Simmons Field.

The Lopers rolled to a 16-6 first-game win before UCO bounced back to earn its first Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association victory of the season in the nightcap.  The teams end the four-game series with a single nine-inning contest at 1 p.m. Saturday.

"That was a big win for us and one we really needed," said head coach Dax Leone, whose team is now 2-6 overall and 1-2 in the league.  "We came out really flat today for whatever reason and didn't play well in the first game, but I was proud of the way we came back.  We need to be ready to go tomorrow so we can get a split of the series."

The Bronchos jumped on top early in the second game with a five-run outburst keyed by Tinkler's big bomb.

Brad McDonald and Jake O'Brien drew one-out walks in the bottom of the first before Dilon Argo loaded the bases with a single.  Another walk to Ethan Elroy forced across one run and then Tinkler followed an out with his second homer of the season, this one a no-doubt shot to center field.

UCO pushed its lead to 7-0 in the second when McDonald singled O'Brien slugged a two-run homer to right-center field and that was more than enough cushion to hold off the Lopers.

Argo finished 3-for-3 to lead an eight-hit attack, while Brent Backlund allowed six hits and three runs in five innings work to earn the pitching win.

The Bronchos fell behind 5-0 in the opener and never recovered, though solo homers by Argo and Tinkler and a two-run shot by O'Brien had UCO within 5-4 after three innings.

UNK pulled away with four runs in the fourth and six in the sixth en route to finishing with 16 hits and the Bronchos didn't help themselves with five errors.

McDonald, O'Brien, Argo and Josh Ingram had two hits apiece to lead the offense.
