Lopers Top UCO In Series Finale

EDMOND (Feb. 21) – A late-game error that allowed three runs to score broke a tie and handed Nebraska-Kearney a 7-4 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association victory over Central Oklahoma Saturday afternoon at Wendell Simmons Field.

The two teams were deadlocked 4-4 in the top of the eighth when the Lopers used a hit and walk to put two runners on with two outs before a dropped a fly ball to left field pushed across three runs.

The Bronchos got one hit in each of their final two at bats, but couldn't answer back in falling for the third time in the four-game series with UNK.

"We played pretty well overall, but made a couple of big mistakes that really hurt us," said head coach Dax Leone.  "It was a tough series for us and we've just got to find a way to get things turned around."

The Lopers broke on top 2-0 in the second, with UCO getting one run back in the bottom of that frame when Dylan Tinkler led off with a double to center field and scored on Jacob Borrego's two-out single.

UNK had a 3-1 lead entering the bottom of the fifth, but the Bronchos tied it as Brad McDonald had a run-scoring fielder's choice and Jake O'Brien a sacrifice fly.

The Lopers went back on top 4-3 with a run in the top of the seventh and UCO answered right back in its next at bat as Dilon Argo had a two-out single and then scored on an error.

Borrego went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead a 10-hit attack, while Josh Ingram and Isaac Hellbusch both had two hits.  Daulton Leiker pitched the first seven innings, allowing just five hits while striking out eight.

The Bronchos, now 2-7 on the season and 1-3 in the league, go to Northwest Missouri for a four-game series next weekend.
