Bronchos Split With Pitt State

PITTSBURG, Kan. (April 16) – Central Oklahoma split a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association doubleheader with Pittsburg State here Thursday, taking the first game 6-5 before dropping a 13-3 decision in the nightcap.

The Bronchos took a 5-1 lead in the opener before holding on down the stretch and trailed just 4-3 after six innings in the second game only to see the Gorillas score five runs in the seventh and four more in the eighth to end it early on the 10-run rule.

UCO, now 18-21 on the season and 13-16 in the league, finishes the four-game series with a 2 p.m. twinbill Friday.

The Bronchos took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the opener when Jacob Borrego led off with a walk, stole second and scored on Jake O'Brien's one-out hit to right field.

PSU tied it in the bottom of the first with a solo home run, but Central moved in front for good with two runs in the third as Collin Day and Josh Ingram had consecutive two-out RBI doubles.

The Bronchos pushed the lead to 5-1 in the fourth when Dilon Argo and Isaac Hellbusch led off with back-to-back singles and ended up scoring on base hits by Dylan Tinkler and Tyler Hatcher.

The Gorillas scored three runs in the fourth, with Argo's run-scoring single up the middle upping UCO's lead to 6-4 in the fifth.  PSU pulled within 6-5 in the sixth, but didn't threaten in its final at bat.

Carson Corff started and earned the pitching win with relief help from Jared Fowler, Rande Revilla and Tanner Ferrell.  Ferrell retired the final two batters to earn his fourth save.

Argo, O'Brien and Ingram had two hits apiece to pace a 12-hit attack.

The Bronchos trailed 2-0 in the fifth inning of the single game before getting on the scoreboard on Ethan Elroy's pinch-hit single and Day's triple to right-center field.

The Gorillas came back with two runs in their half of the inning, but UCO answered that with two of its own in the top of the sixth as Dylan Raper had an RBI grounder and Day a run-scoring double to right field.

PSU broke it open with five runs in the seventh to go up 9-3 and then ended the game with a grand slam in the bottom of the eighth.

The Bronchos managed eight hits, getting two each from Day and Argo.
