Bronchos Drop Twinbill

PITTSBURG, Kan. (April 17) – Late-inning heroics resulted in a pair of devastating Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association losses for Central Oklahoma here Friday afternoon.

Pittsburg State ended Daulton Leiker's no-hit bid with a three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning for a 3-2 first-game victory before the Gorillas scored four runs in the eighth inning to rally for a wild 11-10 win in the nightcap.

"To lose a no-hitter, shutout and game on one pitch is hard to swallow," head coach Dax Leone said.  "I can't say enough about Leiker's performance and our defense was equally as impressive.  These kids have had a lot of tough breaks go against them, but sometimes baseball is not fair."

Leiker dominated in the opener until PSU's final at bat.  The junior right-hander allowed just one base-runner in the first six innings and retired the first two batters in the bottom of the seventh before issuing back-to-back walks followed by Andrew Vogelbaugh's walk-off three-run home run.

UCO built a 2-0 lead on Josh Ingram's run-scoring single in the second and Dylan Tinkler's RBI hit in the sixth.  The Bronchos finished with five hits, getting two from Ingram.

PSU jumped on top 3-0 early in the second game, but the Bronchos bounced back to take a 9-5 lead and were up 10-7 before the Gorillas scored four times in the eighth to pull out a second straight one-run win.

Isaac Hellbusch had a two-run single in the third and Dilon Argo a two-run homer in the fourth to overcome the early 3-0 deficit, but the Gorillas scored twice in the bottom of the fourth to go up 5-4.

UCO came back with three runs in the fifth on Jake O'Brien's three-run homer to right-center field and went ahead 9-5 in the sixth as O'Brien had an RBI fielder's choice and Tinkler a run-scoring single.

The lead was still three at 10-7 following Tyler Hatcher's lead-off solo homer to right field in the top of the eighth, but PSU scored four times on four hits in the bottom of that frame to move in front and UCO couldn't answer in its final at bat.

The Bronchos, now 18-23 on the season, are scheduled to host Benedictine College for a single game at 3 p.m. Tuesday.
