UCO Drops Doubleheader

EDMOND (March 21) – An opening-game rout didn't translate into second-day offensive success for Central Oklahoma Saturday as the Bronchos dropped a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association doubleheader to Lindenwood at Wendell Simmons Field.

UCO pounded the Lions 16-3 in Friday's series opener, but scratched out just four combined runs in dropping 3-2 and 7-2 decisions Saturday.  The teams conclude the four-game set with a single nine-inning contest at 1 p.m. Sunday.

"those are two really disapppointing losses," head coach Dax Leone said.  "The players competed, but we didn't execute when the game mattered.  In an extra inning tough loss like that, it's sometimes hard to regroup and baseball will wear you down if you don't stay in the moment."

The Bronchos got stellar pitching outings from starter Daulton Leiker and reliever Tanner Ferrell in Saturday's opener, but came up short in the three-hour game that took 11 innings to decide.

UCO had a chance to end the game in both the ninth and 10th innings, getting runners thrown out at the plate in both frames.

Brad McDonald led off the ninth with a single and pinch-runner Dylan Raper stole second before going to third on a fly out.  But Raper was caught in a rundown when UCO missed on a squeeze bunt and was easily tagged out at the plate.

Dylan Tinkler had a one-out double in the 10th and Jake O'Brien followed with a single to center field, but pinch-runner Austin Stewart was thrown out in a close plate at home plate to extend the game.

Lindenwood went ahead 3-2 with a single run in the top of the 11th and the Bronchos couldn't respond despite Jacob Borrego's lead-off single.

Leiker started and gave up just four hits and one earned run while striking out 10 in seven innings before giving way to Ferrell, who allowed four hits and one run with three strikeouts in four innings in taking the tough-luck loss.

The Lions took a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the fourth, UCO tied it in the fifth on McDonald's two-run home run to left field, his first of the season and it stayed a 2-2 deadlock until the 11th.

The Bronchos finished with 10 hits, getting two apiece from Borrego, McDonald and Tyler Hatcher.

UCO broke on top 1-0 in the second inning of the nightcap when Tinkler drew a lead-off walk, went to third on Ethan Elroy's single and scored on Borrego's base hit.

Lindenwood tied it in the third, went ahead with a single run in the fourth and pulled away from there.  The Bronchos didn't score again until the bottom of the seventh and finished with just five hits.
