Tough Loss

Box Score

HAYS, Kan. (Feb. 13) –
A walk-off two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning handed Central Oklahoma a disappointing 12-10 setback here Friday on the first day of the Fort Hays State Festival.

The Bronchos battled from behind most of the game and pulled even at 10-all with a run in the seventh before Regis used a lead-off single and two-run homer in its final at bat to end the game in dramatic fashion.

"That's a tough way to lose a game, especially for your players," head coach Dax Leone said.  "It's a pretty simple formula for winning baseball and we aren't doing the little things right now.  Hopefully we're learning from our mistakes, but we need to fix it."

The loss dropped UCO to 0-4 on the young season, with the Bronchos set to take on Colorado School of Mines at 4 p.m. Saturday before finishing the three-day event Sunday with a 1 p.m. rematch against Regis.

The Rangers took an early 2-0 lead, but UCO went ahead 3-2 in the top of the third on Isaac Hellbusch's three-run homer.  Regis came back with three runs in the bottom of that frame to move in front 6-3, though the Bronchos answered in the top of the fourth.

Tyler Hatcher had a two-run double and Austin Stewart a run-scoring double to tie it in the fourth and UCO went up 9-7 in the sixth on RBI hits by Brad McDonald and Josh Ingram.

Regis hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to regain the lead at 10-9, with McDonald's run-scoring single tying it in the top of the seventh and it stayed that way until the Rangers won it.

The Bronchos outhit Regis 17-13, getting three hits apiece from McDonald and Ingram.  Hatcher, Stewart, Jake O'Brien and Dilon Argo added two hits each.
