UCO Splits With RiverHawks

EDMOND (March 6) – Corrina Rivas threw a complete-game four hitter and Allie Eicher drove in the tie-breaking run in the sixth inning to lift Central Oklahoma to a 3-2 second-game victory over Northeastern State Friday afternoon.

The Bronchos lost the opener by an identical 3-2 score before rebounding to earn a split in the first Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association doubleheader of the season. UCO, now 11-12 and 1-1, is back home Saturday to host No. 15-ranked Rogers State at 2 p.m. Saturday.

"Those were two hard-fought games and both could have gone either way," head coach Cody White said. "Corrina gave up a few walks, but she threw well and came through for us when we really needed it."

Rivas scattered four hits while walking six and striking out six in a 139-pitch outing. Both NSU runs came in the third after Rivas walked the bases loaded and gave up a two-run single, but the junior right-hander blanked the RiverHawks the final four innings.

Central broke a 2-2 deadlock in the bottom of the sixth on Eicher's sacrifice fly.

Hazel Puempel led off the inning with a single to left field, went to second when Amelya Huggins walked and both advanced on Halley Randolph's perfect sacrifice bunt. Eicher then lofted a fly ball to foul territory in left field that allowed the speedy Puempel to race home with the winning run.

The Bronchos went up 2-0 in the bottom of the first, sparked by Lexy Dobson's lead-off triple to the left-center field gap. Dobson stayed put on Brighton Gilbert's bunt single, then raced home and barely beat the tag on a groundout for the game's first run.

Gilbert later scored on an error to make it 2-0, with NSU tying it in the third.

NSU broke a scoreless deadlock in the first game with one run in the fourth and added two unearned runs in the fifth to go up 3-0 before the Bronchos finally broke through.

Dobson led off the inning with a single to center field, but was out at second on a fielder's choice that allowed Gilbert to reach base. Gilbert stole second and then scored on Huggins' two-out line-drive double to right-center field, with Huggins later scoring on an error to make it 3-2.

Puempel made a brilliant defensive play in the sixth to keep UCO within a run with, sprinting to the right-center field gap to snare a line drive before doubling a runner off second to end the inning, but the Bronchos couldn't mount a last-inning rally.

Central finished with six hits in the opener, getting two from Gilbert.
