Gilbert Leads UCO Past No. 11 Hillcats

EDMOND (March 7) – Brighton Gilbert went 3-for-3 with her first career home run to ignite the offense and Kylee Lynch dominated in the pitching circle to lead Central Oklahoma past No. 11-ranked Rogers 5-1 in the first game of a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association doubleheader Saturday afternoon.

Gilbert had a single, triple and homer to lead an eight-hit attack, while Lynch limited the Hillcats to four hits.

The Bronchos also made several fine defensive plays in improving to 12-12 overall and 2-1 in the conference. RSU fell to 19-7 and 2-1 heading into the nightcap.

Gilbert started her big game in the bottom of the first, leading off with a blooper over the left fielder's head for a triple. Hazel Puempel drove her in one out later with a sacrifice fly  to make it 1-0.

Gilbert led off again in the third and went one base more. Gilbert hit another blooper to left that bounced in front of the fielder and careened towards the corner, allowing the junior speedster to race around the bases for the inside-the-park homer that made it 2-0.

The Bronchos used two hits and a pair of errors to up their advantage to 4-0 in the fourth.

Puempel started things with a single to left and advanced on an error before stealing third. She scored on an error that allowed Amelya Huggins to reach base and Huggins later scored on Haley Pomplun's line-drive single to right field.

UCO had a chance to extend their lead in the fifth after loading the bases on consecutive one-out singles by Gilbert, Lexy Dobson and Puempel, but the Hillcats escaped with a pop-out and strikeout.

RSU scored its lone run in the top of the sixth, but the Bronchos answered right back in their half of the inning when Pomplun drove an 0-2 pitch over the center field wall for her second homer of the season.

That made it 5-1 and Lynch closed out her third complete-game outing of the season in the seventh. The freshman left-hander scattered four hits while walking one and striking out one in improving to 6-4.
