UCO Drops Two To Griffons

EDMOND (March 26) – A dominating second-game pitching performance wasn't enough for Central Oklahoma to end a two-year drought against Missouri Western here Sunday afternoon in a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association doubleheader at newly remodeled Broncho Field.

The No. 16-ranked Bronchos dropped a 9-6 decision in the opener and fell 1-0 in the nightcap despite Jayden Chestnut tossing a complete-game one-hitter.  UCO -- averaging 9.4 hits a game and hitting a league-leading .342 on the season -- was limited to 10 hits on the day, including a season-low four in the second-game loss.

MWSU has now won seven straight over the Bronchos, taking five games last year before Sunday's sweep.  The Griffons were also the last team to shut out UCO, earning a 9-0 win in an elimination game of the Central Regional I Tournament last year.

"Missouri Western has a great team and right now they seem to have our number," head coach Cody White said.  "We didn't swing the bats like we normally do in both games and that was very disappointing.  Jayden threw a great game, but we just couldn't come up with any offense."

The Bronchos fell to 21-7 on the season and 5-3 in conference play with the two losses.  MWSU, the defending regular season league champions, improved to 25-7 and 5-1.

Chestnut was magnificent in the second-game loss, throwing 101 pitches and striking out seven while issuing five walks.  The only hit the Griffons managed against the hard-throwing sophomore right-hander was a bunt single in the sixth, but MWSU parlayed that into the game's only run.

Morgan Rathmann drew a lead-off walk in the sixth before Shelbie Atwell laid down a perfect bunt toward first base, with Rathmann racing all the way to third on the play.  Atwell was thrown out in a rundown trying to steal second and Chestnut got a pop-up for the second out.

UCO then intentionally walked MWSU's leading power hitter to put runners on first and third, but the Griffons foiled that strategy by pulling off a double steal and Rathmann scored the game's lone run.

The Bronchos had a few scoring chances, the best one coming in the fourth.  Carrie Abrams – who had two of UCO's four hits in the game – led off with a double and went to third on an error that allowed JoBi Heath to reach base, but three straight outs ended the threat.

UCO managed just six hits in the opener, but three of those left the park as Morgan Heard, Ashleigh Tramel and Carli Jones all went deep.

Heard's ninth home run of the season came early when the junior standout led off the bottom of the first inning with a bomb off the scoreboard in left-center field to stake the Bronchos to a 1-0 lead.

It stayed that way until the fourth when MWSU erupted for seven runs on seven hits and an error to move in front 7-1.

UCO got two runs back in the bottom of that frame after Brooke Zukerman was hit by pitch with two outs and Tramel followed with a first-pitch blast over the left field fence for her first homer of the year.

The Bronchos got close in the fifth on Jones' three-run dinger.  Abrams had a one-out single up the middle and Tori Collet drew a two-out walk before Jones launched a cannon ball to straightaway center field for her fourth homer that pulled UCO within 7-6.

But the Griffons answered back with two runs in the top of the sixth to up their lead to 9-6 and the Bronchos failed to score in their final two at bats.

Abrams had two of UCO's six hits.

The Bronchos are back in action again Monday, traveling to Lawton to take on Cameron in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
