Bronchos Sweep Cameron

LAWTON, Okla. (March 27) – Tori Collet clubbed a pair of two-run home runs and Central Oklahoma got its offense back on track in a doubleheader sweep of intrastate rival Cameron here Monday afternoon.

The No. 16-ranked Bronchos -- limited to 10 hits in two losses Sunday against Missouri Western – broke loose for 20 hits in taking down the Aggies, winning 4-2 in the opener before rolling to a 9-0 second-game rout.

"Our offense was a lot better today," said head coach Cody White, whose team improved to 23-7.  "We stayed aggressive at the plate and made a lot of good swings.  I thought we also played well defensively and got two good pitching outings."

Jayden Chestnut threw a complete-game three-hitter in the first-game win, giving up single runs in the fourth and sixth innings.  The sophomore struck out five and walked three in a 118-pitch outing, improving to 8-3 on the season.

Ashleigh Tramel and JoBi Heath had two hits apiece to lead a nine-hit offensive attack, while Collet had the first of her two-run homers.

UCO grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Brooke Zukerman reached on a one-out single, stole second and scooted home on Tramel's bloop double to center field.

It became a 3-0 advantage in the third as Heath ripped a two-out single to right field and Collet followed with her first homer of the day, belting the first pitch she saw over the center field fence.

Cameron got on the scoreboard in the fourth and the Bronchos countered that in the sixth.  Carli Jones drew a lead-off walk, pinch-runner Kaitlynn Monckton went to second on Zukerman's sacrifice bunt and then scored on Tramel's triple off the center field wall.

The Aggies pulled within 4-2 on a solo homer in the sixth and got the lead runner on in the seventh before Chestnut closed out her seventh complete game with three straight fly outs.

UCO also grabbed an early lead in the nightcap as Heath roped a double off the left field wall in the top of the first to plate Morgan Heard, who started the inning with a single to right and then stole second.

Zukerman, a Lawton native playing for the final time in her hometown, made it 2-0 with a line-drive shot over the left field fence to lead off the fourth.  It was the 31st career homer for the senior slugger, leaving her third on UCO's all-time list.

The Bronchos broke the game open with seven runs in the sixth, highlighted by Collet's two-run homer to left-center field and Carrie Abrams' three-run triple in the right-center field gap.  Zukerman had two of UCO's six hits in the inning as 12 batters went to the plate and the Aggies also committed two errors.

Zukerman's 3-for-4 performance at the plate paced an 11-hit onslaught and the right fielder also threw a runner out at the plate in the second to keep CU scoreless.  Tramel had another two-hit outing.

Peyton Walker picked up the pitching win, scattering six hits and striking out five in posting her eighth shutout of the season.  The junior right-hander improved to 12-3 in tossing her 16th complete game.

UCO returns to Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play this weekend with a Friday doubleheader at
Lindenwood and Saturday twinbill at Lincoln.
