No. 16 UCO Splits With Bearcats

EDMOND (March 25) – Carrie Abrams sparked a 13-hit attack that carried Central Oklahoma to a 9-3 second-game victory and gave the No. 16-ranked Bronchos a doubleheader split with Northwest Missouri Saturday afternoon.

The Bearcats earned a 10-5 win in the opener to end a seven-game UCO winning streak before the Bronchos rebounded with the second-game triumph, jumping out to an 8-0 lead after three innings and coasting in from there.

UCO, now 21-5 on the season and 5-1 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play, is back at home again Sunday with a 12 p.m. doubleheader against Missouri Western.

"We made some mental mistakes that really hurt us in the first game," head coach Cody White said.  "I was happy with the way we bounced back in the second game.  We came up with some big hits in two-out situations that allowed us to take control of the game.

"We've got two big games coming up tomorrow against Missouri Western and will need to be at our best."

Abrams went 3-for-4 at the plate while scoring three runs and driving in two more to pace UCO's second-game offensive attack.  The Bronchos also got two hits each from JoBi Heath, Tori Collet and Ashleigh Tramel.

Abrams got UCO going in the first inning of the nightcap with a one-out single to center field and Heath promptly followed with a home run, a long clout to left field that quickly made it 2-0.

The Bronchos scored four two-out runs in the second after an error kept the inning alive.  Abrams had an RBI triple off the right field fence and Collet a two-run double to right-center field as the lead climbed to 6-0.

UCO upped it to 8-0 in the third on two-out RBI singles by Abrams and Collet and appeared en route to ending the game early on the eight-run rule before the Bearcats scored three times in the fifth.

Morgan Heard gave the Bronchos their final run with a lead-off homer – her team-high eighth -- in the bottom of the fifth, this one a line-drive shot to left field.

Jayden Chestnut picked up the pitching win, improving to 7-2.

The Bronchos had 11 hits in the first-game loss and led 2-0 after one inning, but NWMSU scored eight unanswered runs to take control and held off UCO's late comeback try.

Abrams and Heath had one-out singles followed by a walk to Collet to load the bases in the first before Abrams scored on a wild pitch and Heath went home on Carli Jones' groundout.

The Bearcats used five hits and two errors to score six runs in the top of the second and added two more in the fourth to go ahead 8-2.

UCO threatened to cut into that deficit in the bottom of the fourth, but had a runner thrown out at home on a close play and ended up leaving the bases loaded.

The Bronchos got close in the sixth with a trio of runs.  Jones led off with an infield single and Brooke Zukerman ripped a double to right-center field before Tramel drove home one run with a single through the left side.

Lexi Watson then blasted a long fly ball to deep center field that appeared destined to go off the top of the fence, but NWMSU's center field made a leaping catch.  One run scored on the sacrifice fly and Heard followed with an RBI double down the right field line to get UCO within 8-5.

NWMSU padded its lead with a two-run homer in the top of the seventh and the Bronchos had no answer in their final at bat.

Jones went 3-for-4 to lead UCO's 11-hit attack, while Abrams and Tramel had two hits apiece.
