Late Rally Gives Bronchos Sweep of NSU

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. (April 4) – Austin Stewart's two-run  single in the top of the eighth inning gave Central Oklahoma its first lead of the game and highlighted a thrilling late rally that propelled the Bronchos a 12-9 victory to complete a doubleheader sweep of intrastate rival Northeastern State here Saturday.

UCO prevailed 8-3 the opener before overcoming an 8-1 deficit in taking the nightcap to win its third straight game after dropping a 16-3 decision in Friday's series opener.  The Bronchos improved to 15-18 overall and 10-13 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association while dropping NSU to 18-13 and 12-12.

"Baseball is a players game and a test of will," head coach Dax Leone said.  "Our kids showed a lot of fight today and executed in key moments.  We had some timely hits and made the pitches in the moment, when it mattered most.  We built this program on toughness and a dirt bag mentality and this group did that all weekend."

UCO was down 9-4 going into its final at bat in the nightcap before pushing across five runs on just one hit to force the game into extra innings.

Three walks and two hit batsmen helped the Bronchos in that frame, with Dylan Tinkler's two-run double the only hit of the inning.  Tyler Hatcher drew a bases loaded walk, Collin Day had an RBI groundout and Dilon Argo tied it with a sacrifice fly.

UCO came back with three more in the eighth, highlighted by Stewart's two-run single to right center that broke the 9-9 tie.  Chris Lobato added an RBI fielder's choice to make it 12-9 and Tanner Ferrell had no trouble putting the RiverHawks down in the bottom of the eighth to end the game.

Tinkler, Lobato and Day had two hits apiece to lead an 11-hit attack, with Tinkler driving in five runs.  His three-run homer in the sixth trimmed an 8-1 deficit to 8-4 and gave the Bronchos a chance in their last offensive try.

UCO used six pitchers in the game, with Ferrell earning the win after pitching the final two innings.

The Bronchos also had 11 hits in the first game, with Hatcher going 3-for-4 with a pair of solo homers to lead the way while Ethan Elroy and Day had two hits each.  Daulton Leiker started and gave up just four hits and one earned run in the first five innings to earn the pitching win, with Ferrell going the final two innings.

UCO led 2-1 going into the fourth before Elroy's solo shot and Argo's RBI single pushed the lead to 5-1 and the Bronchos coasted in from there.

Central is back in action Tuesday, hosting Austin College for a non-conference doubleheader at 2 p.m.
