Elroy Lifts Bronchos In Season Finale

EDMOND (April 26) – Ethan Elroy's three-run home run highlighted a six-run inning that gave Central Oklahoma the lead and the Bronchos held on to trim Southwest Baptist 6-5 Sunday afternoon in the season finale.

UCO dropped a 9-5 decision in the opener as a seventh-inning rally fell short before bouncing back to take the nightcap and end a six-game losing streak in finishing the season 19-26 overall and 14-21 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.

"This was a disappointing season for all of us," head coach Dax Leone said.  "As the leader of this program, I take full responsibility for everything that goes on, especially when it's negative.  We didn't do a good enough job coaching and that always starts with myself.  The players competed hard all year, but we just didn't always play clean baseball."

SBU had a 1-0 lead entering the bottom of the fourth  in the second game before the Bronchos exploded for six runs on six hits.

Isaac Hellbusch started things with a lead-off single up the middle and he stole second before scoring on Jake O'Brien's single to center field to tie the game.  Tyler Hatcher's run-scoring single put UCO on top and Elroy followed with his no-doubt three-run bomb to left-center, with Jacob Borrego's RBI single later in the frame pushing the lead to 6-1.

The Bearcats got one run back in the fifth and then threatened in their final at bat in the top of the seventh, scoring three runs and putting runners at second and third before Tanner Ferrell was able to get a fly out to end the game.

Elroy had two of UCO's seven hits, while Brent Backlund earned the pitching win with two innings of relief work.

The Bronchos jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the first game on Dylan Tinkler's two-run double to center field, but SBU scored eight runs on six hits in the third to go ahead 8-2.

It was 9-2 entering the seventh, with UCO getting a two-run single from Dylan Raper and an RBI fielder's choice from Borrego in making it 9-5 before the rally stalled.

Raper and Hatcher had two hits apiece to pace a nine-hit attack.

It was the final game for nine UCO seniors – Elroy, Hatcher, Ferrell, Tinkler, Jake O'Brien, Josh Ingram, Andrew Davis, Dennis Morelli and Ricky Reeves.
