UCO Edges Blue Tigers

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (March 14) – Dennis Morelli pitched eight stellar innings and Central Oklahoma manufactured just enough offense to get past Lincoln 4-2 here Saturday afternoon.

The Bronchos scored single runs in the second, sixth and seventh innings to take a 3-0 lead and came back with their final run in the top of the ninth after the Blue Tigers had cut the lead to 3-2 in the eighth.

UCO improved to 6-10 on the season and 2-6 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play.  The Bronchos and Lincoln meet for a 12 p.m. doubleheader Sunday before finishing the four-game series at 1 p.m. Monday.

"We continue to make fundamental mistakes and not play a clean game on both sides of the ball," head coach Dax Leone said.  "It's frustrating.  We thought Dennis would give us a chance today and he was outstanding for eight innings.

"Baseball is a long season that grinds on you mentally.  We have to find a way to tighten up some fundamentals."

Morelli scattered seven hits and didn't walk a batter in going the first eight innings while striking out three.  Tanner Ferrell pitched a perfect ninth inning to secure the win and earn his first save.

UCO broke on top 1-0 in the second when Dylan Tinkler reached on an error, went to third on back-to-back groundouts and scored on Jacob Borrego's single.

It stayed that way until the sixth when Tinkler and Ethan Elroy had consecutive singles before an error allowed Tinkler to cross the plate and made it 2-0.

The Bronchos upped the advantage to 3-0 an inning later with a two-out RBI double by Jake O'Brien that scored Dilon Argo, who led off with a double.

The Blue Tigers scored their two runs in the bottom of the eighth to get within 3-2, but UCO came back with an insurance run in the top of the ninth when O'Brien drew a bases-loaded walk.
