Bronchos Blast Lincoln

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (March 15) – Dilon Argo had five hits to lead an offensive assault that carried Central Oklahoma to a doubleheader sweep of Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association rival Lincoln here Sunday afternoon.

Argo went 3-for-5 to lead a 15-hit attack in a 16-4 first-game rout and then was one of five players with two hits in the nightcap as the surging Bronchos rolled 10-3 to stretch their winning streak to four straight.

UCO, now 8-10 overall and 4-6 in the league, will try to complete a four-game series sweep of the Blue Tigers at 1 p.m. Monday.

"Any time you can win a doubleheader on the road in this league it's an accomplishment for your team," head coach Dax Leone said.  "We had a really good day on offense and created a lot of mismatches in our favor.  I thought Brent (Backlund) was really sharp in the second game and we played fundamental defense behind him."

The Bronchos took control early in the opener with a five-run volley in the top of the first.  Argo led off the game with a home run to center field, Tyler Hatcher followed with another long ball to left-center and Isaac Hellbusch added a two-run double to stake UCO to the big 5-0 lead.

Dylan Tinkler blasted a two-run homer and Jake O'Brien had an RBI single in the second as the Bronchos made it 9-1, with O'Brien's three-run dinger and Argo's RBI double pushing the advantage to 13-1 in the third.

UCO coasted in from there with pitchers Carson Corff, Nick Sornsin and Rande Revilla combining to hold the Blue Tigers to six hits.   Hatcher, O'Brien, Tinkler and Hellbusch had two hits apiece along with Argo's three-hit performance.

The Bronchos kept up the offensive onslaught in the nightcap as Argo, Tinkler, O'Brien, Ethan Elroy and Jacob Borrego had two hits each to back up Backlund's solid outing on the mound.

Backlund scattered six hits and didn't walk a batter while giving up two earned runs and striking out nine in six innings before Drew Polk came on for the final inning.

Tinkler's two-run double gave UCO a 2-0 lead in the third, with Argo and O'Brien making it a 4-0 advantage in the fourth with RBI singles.  The cushion grew to 8-0 in the fifth behind Borrego's two-run bomb and Hatcher added a solo shot in the sixth as the Bronchos cruised in.
