Offense Sparks Bronchos To Two Wins

EDMOND (Feb. 8) – Central Oklahoma used a lethal offensive attack to roll past a pair of teams on the second day of the UCO Softball Invitational Saturday afternoon.

The Bronchos finished with 22 hits – including eight for extra bases – in beating Southwest Baptist 7-2 and Colorado Christian 7-1. Lexy Dobson ripped a double, triple and home run to lead a 13-hit attack in the opener and Brighton Gilbert had three hits in the win over CCU.

UCO stretched its winning streak to four straight in evening its record at 5-5 on the season. The Bronchos play at 12 p.m. and 4 p.m. Sunday to end the three-day event.

"We stayed aggressive and had a good day at the plate," head coach Cody White said. "It was good to get contributions from a lot of different players in the lineup and that's what we need to see moving forward."

Central also got solid pitching performances from starters Kylee Lynch and Corrina Rivas, with Lynch earning the win against SBU before Rivas went the distance in the second contest.

The Bearcats scored two unearned runs in the top of the first inning to grab a quick lead in the first game, but UCO got one of those back in its first at bat when Dobson led off with the first homer of her three-year career.

The Bronchos took the lead with four runs in the third. Dobson doubled, went to third on Gilbert's single and scored on Halley Randolph's bunt hit before Hazel Puempel drilled a three-run homer to right-center field to make it 5-2.

Audrie Morrison's RBI single pushed the lead to 6-2 in the fourth and Allie Eicher added a run-scoring single in the fifth to push the advantage to 7-2.

Dobson and Puempel had three hits apiece, while Gilbert, Randolph and Eicher added two hits each. Lynch scattered six hits and struck out six in going the first six innings for her second straight pitching win, with Bailey McKittrick throwing a scoreless seventh inning.

UCO was never tested by Colorado Christian after jumping out to a 6-0 lead after two innings.

Gilbert singled and later scored on an error to put the Bronchos on top 1-0 in the first and Central erupted for five runs in the second to take control.

Dobson and Amelya Huggins each delivered two-run doubles while Randolph added an RBI single in that frame. The Cougars scored their lone run in the top of the fifth, but UCO answered that with Aleah Bozarth's pinch-hit solo homer.

Gilbert's 3-for-4 performance led the Bronchos and Puempel had two hits. Rivas allowed seven hits, walked one and struck out two in throwing her second straight complete game.
