Bronchos Top Ouachita Baptist In HSU Invite Opener

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team beat Ouachita Baptist 5-1 Friday to open the Henderson State Invitational with a victory. The Bronchos will play Oklahoma Baptist Saturday before facing the host, HSU, on Sunday.

Garrett Takamatsu's two-run home run in the top of the third gave the Bronchos a lead it wouldn't relinquish. Brett Hopkins added an RBI single in the sixth and then belted a two-run homer of his own in the eighth to give the Bronchos a 5-1 lead.

Dylan Hall got the start for the Bronchos and was again solid in his second outing of the season. The senior right-hander threw five innings, struck out seven, and allowed just one run on the day. Hall allowed a leadoff triple in the bottom of the first, and that runner scored on a wild pitch. OBU never threatened again.

Brayden Nelson threw three innings of relief work, striking out a pair of batters. Beaux Bonvillain closed the game with one inning of work. He allowed a hit and struck out one, then got OBU to hit into a game-ending double play.

Zac Freeman drew a one-out walk in the top of the third. Takamatsu followed with a shot over the fence. The junior had a double and a triple last weekend, and is off to a good start this weekend with yet another extra-base hit.

Philip Scott led off with a walk in the top of the sixth. He stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball. With one out, Hopkins delivered a single to center field to score Scott and give the Bronchos a 3-1 lead.

In the eighth, Kyle Crowl hit a two-out double before Hopkins stepped up to the plate and smacked his first home run in a Broncho uniform that made it 5-1.

Hopkins finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs. The first five batters in Central's lineup scored Friday.

UCO will play Oklahoma Baptist at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
