UCO Downed By Oklahoma Baptist

ARKADELPHIA, Kan. – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team dropped a 7-2 decision to Oklahoma Baptist Saturday afternoon in the second game of the Henderson State Invitational. The Bronchos will play the host, HSU, Sunday afternoon to wrap up the weekend invite.

"We got behind early and didn't hit the ball well," UCO head coach John Martin said. "When you get in a hole you have to play really well to get out of it and we didn't do that. We need to play better tomorrow."

Central Oklahoma is now 3-2 on the young season. Brayden Belden got the loss on the day and is now 0-2 on the season.

OBU took an early lead, going up 3-0 in the first inning. A leadoff double got it started. An RBI single put OBU on the board. An RBI double made it 2-0. A sacrifice fly made it 3-0.

Oklahoma Baptist went up 4-0 with a solo home run in the second and did the same in the top of the third to make it 5-0.

Central got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third. Garrett Takamatsu singled through the left side to score Dru Barrier, who reached on an error earlier in the inning.

In the fourth, Colton Bertus doubled to right center to score Joe Mondragon and make it 5-2. But OBU put two more on the board in the top of the fifth to reach the final, 7-2.

Central Oklahoma scattered eight hits on the day. The first seven batters in the Broncho lineup had one, with Takamatsu leading the way with a 2-for-4 day. He and Bertus' doubles, along with Zac Freeman's triple, made up the three extra base hits for UCO.

Belden finished with 2 1/3 innings pitched, seven hits allowed, and five runs. Colton Croft threw two innings of relief work and allowed three hits and two runs. He struck out two in his effort.

Lawson Isaacs threw 2 2/3 and struck out three, Chandler Shapard and Owen Logan each threw one inning to close out the game.

Central Oklahoma will face Henderson State Sunday. The Bronchos beat HSU last week, 10-4, in the season-opener in Edmond.
