Bronchos sweep Emporia State

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma softball team swept Emporia State Wednesday in a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association doubleheader that followed the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the newly renovated Broncho Softball Stadium.

After speeches by Dr. Gerry Pinkston, UCO's head coach from 1975-1997, and university President Dr. Don Betz, as well as others, the Bronchos opened the stadium to alumni, donors and fans alike. Then the team got to work.

Central beat Emporia State 4-3 in the first game – and had to do that in comeback fashion. UCO took the second game of the doubleheader 9-0 in a five-inning run rule.

"What a great day," UCO head coach Cody White said. "To see how many people came out this morning, how many people are supporting this program, that's just fantastic. It was a lot of fun and good to see the former players and other supporters who have helped make this program what it is today."

On the game.

"Well our girls just made it that much better," White said. "This was a big day for them and they really had to focus when the game started. I'm proud of the way they locked in and got two wins today."

The Bronchos fell behind 2-0 in the top of the second inning in Game 1 Wednesday, when sophomore pitcher Jayden Chestnut got the start. But UCO put one back on the board in the bottom of the second though. Brooke Zukerman drew a leadoff walk, then moved to second on an Ashleigh Tramel sacrifice bunt. Mo Selman moved Zukerman to third with a single up the middle before Lexi Watson laid down an RBI bunt-single to make it 2-1.

The Bronchos struck again in the sixth.

This time, Selman led off with a walk. Then Watson again laid down a sacrifice bunt but reached safely on a throwing error by the pitcher. Morgan Heard then reached on fielder's choice and Carrie Abrams picked up an infield single to load the bases for JoBi Heath.

Heath smacked a shot to right field that would score Heard and Selman. Abrams came in to score on a sacrifice-fly from Tori Collet on the next at bat. Emporia State made it 4-3 in the top of the seventh with a lead-off homer, but Chestnut finished off the game with a strikeout and two fly-outs.

Chestnut threw seven innings, allowed six hits and three earned runs, and also struck out three. The sophomore improved to 6-2 on the season.

Heath finished the first game 3 of 4 at the plate, and her two RBIs led the Bronchos.

Peyton Walker got the start for the Bronchos in the second game, but this one was all about the Broncho offense.

Heard led the game off with a double to center.  Abrams got on next when her attempt at a sacrifice ended with an infield single. And then Heath reached safely on a ground ball to the second baseman, who couldn't make a play. Collet stepped up and hit an RBI single to left field to make it 1-0.

The Bronchos were just beginning.

Carli Jones then reached on an error by the right fielder and after Abrams scored, it was 2-0. Zukerman singled up the middle to make it 3-0. Then Tramel pelted a 3-RBI double to left field to make it 6-0.

Still not done and still no outs, though Watson was out on the next play on a sac-bunt.

But Heard came up for the second time in the inning after that and she made it 7-0 with a single to center. Abrams also got two at bats in the first inning and she picked up an RBI on a sac-fly to score Selman and make it 8-0 Bronchos. Heath flied out to end the inning, but Walker had more than enough to work with.

Jones gave her a little more with an RBI-double in the fourth to score Abrams.

Walker finished the day allowing just two hits in five innings of work. She also struck out two.

Every Broncho got a hit in the second game, Heard and Abrams each got two to lead the way. Tramel's three RBIs was also a team-high.

Central Oklahoma – and its new stadium – get to see plenty of Broncho softball this week. UCO his home through the weekend, hosting Northwest Missouri at noon Saturday, and Missouri Western at noon Sunday.
