UCO Takes Two In Missouri

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (March 18) – Carli Jones smacked a pair of home runs to spark a first-game win and Lexi Watson's three-hit day fueled a second-game victory for Central Oklahoma in the Hy-vee Classic here Saturday.

Jones had two-run homers in the first and fourth innings as the No. 9-ranked Bronchos built a big early lead before holding off Upper Iowa 9-8 in the opener and Watson went 3-for-3 in a 5-3 triumph over Wayne State.

The Bronchos, now 16-4, wrap up the three-day event with Sunday games against Mary at 9 a.m. and Sioux Falls at 1 p.m.

"Both games were a little more exciting than we wanted," head coach Cody White said.  "We had a big lead against Upper Iowa and almost let it get away from us, then didn't take advantage of some opportunities we had to put the game away against Wayne.

"But we stepped up and made the plays we needed to at the end to win both games.  Hopefully we can come out tomorrow and finish the weekend off the right way."

UCO finished with 16 hits in the UIU win and appeared en route to a run-rule rout before the Peacocks rallied.  Jones, Morgan Watson, Heard, Carrie Abrams, JoBi Heath, Ashleigh Tramel, Mo Selman and Watson had two hits each for the Bronchos.

Jones' two-run homer to left-center field capped a four-run first inning that also saw Heath and Tori Collet collect back-to-back RBI doubles.  Abrams belted a one-out solo homer to right field in the second to make it 5-0.

UCO pushed its lead to 7-0 in the third as Watson had a run-scoring single and Selman an RBI sacrifice bunt and it was a 9-1 cushion following Jones' two-run blast to center field in the fourth.

UIU got back in the game with a five-run fifth, highlighted by a grand slam, and threatened to pull out an improbable win in the bottom of the seventh after scoring two runs to pull within 8-7.

The Peacocks had one out and one out in the final frame before Peyton Walker came on to retire the final two batters and earn her second save of the season.  Jayden Chestnut started and picked up the win, while Abbie Lancaster also saw action in relief.

UCO trailed 2-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning against Wayne State before surging in front behind a five-run outburst.

Heath and Collet started that rally with back-to-back singles to lead off the inning and Jones moved both runners with a sacrifice bunt before Brooke Zukerman's infield hit scored Heath.

Mo Selman added an RBI single and Watson a run-scoring double, with two errors helping the Bronchos score two more runs in taking a 5-2 lead.

The Wildcats got a run back in the sixth, but UCO held on for its third straight win in the tournament after an opening extra-inning loss to Augustana.

Watson's 3-for-3 performance led a 10-hit attack, while Heath added two hits.

Jessi Walker earned the pitching win with 2 1/3 innings of relief work, allowing just one hit and one unearned run.  Chestnut came on to pitch the seventh and earn her second save of the season.
