Bronchos Finish Off Perfect 5-0 Weekend

DURANT, Okla. (Feb. 5) – JoBi Heath's two-run single in the sixth inning capped an 8-0 run-rule romp over Midwestern State that completed Central Oklahoma's five-game sweep of the Southeastern Oklahoma Invitational here Sunday.

Carrie Abrams went 3-for-4 with three runs batted in to fuel a 7-4 come-from-behind win over Rockhurst in Sunday's opener before the No. 20-ranked Bronchos finished off the perfect season-opening weekend with their final-game rout.

"I'm really proud of the way our team stepped up this weekend," head coach Cody White said.  "We got contributions from a lot of different players and that's what we wanted to see.  It's a great start to the season and we just want to build on this moving forward."

UCO ended the weekend with the shutout of the Mustangs, which included another stellar pitching outing by Peyton Walker.  The junior right-hander finished off a 3-0, one-save weekend by giving up just four hits and one walk while striking out four in going the distance against MSU.

The Bronchos took control of the game with a three-run second-inning uprising.  Mo Selman keyed that outburst with a two-run double and Morgan Heard added a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0.

Heard's solo home run leading off the fifth made it 4-0 and UCO ended the game on the eight-run rule in the bottom of the sixth with four runs.

The Bronchos led off the sixth with back-to-back doubles by Tori Collet and Brooke Zukerman before Carli Jones belted the third double of the inning one out later to push the lead to 6-0.  Heath came through with a two-out single to push across the final two runs and end the game.

Heath, Heard and Zukerman finished with two hits apiece to pace the offense.

Heard's first-inning solo homer staked UCO to a 1-0 lead in the first game against Rockhurst and it stayed that way until the Hawks struck for three runs in the top of the fifth.

The Bronchos responded with three runs of their own in the bottom half of that inning to reclaim the lead, with Abrams driving in two runs with a two-out triple before scoring the go-ahead run on a wild pitch.

UCO upped their lead to 7-3 in the sixth with another three-run volley, getting a two-run triple from Heath and run-scoring single from Abrams.  Rockhurst scored once in the top of the seventh, but it wasn't enough.

Abrams' three hits led UCO's 10-hit attack.  Abbie Lancaster picked up the pitching win, while Walker earned the save.

The Bronchos don't play again until going to San Antonio, Texas Feb. 17-19 for the St. Mary's Classic.
