UCO Splits Two Games In Texas

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Feb. 17) – Tori Collet's third-inning grand slam powered Central Oklahoma to an 8-0 run-rule rout of St. Edward's to give the No. 12-ranked Bronchos a split of their first two games in the Rattler Invitational here Friday.

UCO dropped an 8-7 extra-inning decision to Metro State in the opener before bouncing back with the romp over the Hilltoppers.  The Bronchos, now 6-1 on the young season, meet host and No. 10-rated St. Mary's at 10 a.m. Saturday to end round-robin play in the four-team, three-day tournament.

"It was good to see us come back the way we did after losing a game we felt we should have won," head coach Cody White said.  "We made way too many mistakes in the opener and that was disappointing, but I was proud of the way we put that behind us.

"It's early in the season and there's still a lot of things we need to work on."

Peyton Walker threw a two-hit shutout in the second contest, allowing just two walks while striking out six as the junior right-hander improved to 4-1 on the season.

Walker got all the support she needed in the bottom of the third inning when the Bronchos erupted for five runs.  Walks to Mo Selman and JoBi Heath along with a two-out single by Carrie Abrams loaded the bases for Collet, who smacked her first homer of the season over the left field wall.

Lexi Watson followed with a solo homer to left-center to make it 5-0 and Abrams' run-scoring single in the fourth upped the lead to 6-0.  RBI base hits by Carli Jones and Selman in the fifth ended the game on the eight-run rule.

UCO had a 6-2 lead in its first game after Lauren Kelley's two-run homer capped a five-run third-inning uprising, but Metro State rallied and tied it at six-all in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings.

Morgan Heard's sacrifice fly put the Bronchos up 7-6 in the top of the ninth, but the Roadrunners pushed across a pair of two-out unearned runs in the bottom of that inning to pull out the win.
