UCO Topples League-leading Lions

EDMOND (April 9) – Carson Corff gave Central Oklahoma a solid start on the mound and the surging Bronchos used a 17-hit attack to knock off Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association leader Missouri Southern 11-9 Thursday afternoon at Wendell Simmons Field.

Corff gave up five hits and three runs while striking out eight in pitching a season-high six innings before departing with an 8-3 lead and UCO held off the Lions the rest of the way in winning for the fourth straight time.

The Bronchos improved to 16-18 overall and 11-13 in the conference while dropping MSSU to 26-8 and 17-4.  The two teams meet for a 1 p.m. doubleheader Friday before wrapping up the four-game series with a 1 p.m. single contest Saturday.

"Our kids had to scrap all day today and hold off a really good Missouri Southern club," head coach Dax Leone said.  "We had some timely hits and I thought Corff was real polished today.  When pitchers control the game with good tempo, usually playing solid defense follows as it did today."

UCO had just two extra-base hits – a double and home run – and got multi-hit games from seven players in scoring double digit runs for the eighth time in 24 games.

Jacob Borrego and Jake O'Brien had three hits apiece to lead the offense, while Dilon Argo, Isaac Hellbusch, Tyler Hatcher, Ethan Elroy and Collin Day had two hits each.

Hatcher's massive solo homer over the center field wall against a stiff breeze answered a MSSU run in the top of the second before the Bronchos took control with a five-run volley in the fourth.

The Bronchos had six singles in that frame, with Borrego's two-run hit to left field the big blow.  Elroy and Argo added RBI hits and Hatcher a sacrifice fly as UCO went on top 6-1 and the advantage grew to 8-1 in the fifth on run-scoring singles by Hatcher and Day.

MSSU came back with two runs in the top of the sixth, but the Bronchos answered that in their half of the inning as Hellbusch had an RBI single to left and Tinkler a sacrifice fly to keep the lead at seven.

The Lions got close with four runs in the seventh against two relievers before Tanner Ferrell came on to get the final out with two runners on and MSSU scored twice more in the eighth to get within 10-9.

UCO pushed across an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth when Borrego led off with a double, went to third on Argo's line-drive single off MSSU's pitcher and scored on a wild pitch.

Ferrell then put the Lions down in order in the top of the ninth to nail down his third save of the season.
