Hatcher Slam Sparks Bronchos

WARRENSBURG, Mo. (March 28) – Tyler Hatcher's second-inning grand slam capped a five-run outburst that carried Central Oklahoma past Central Missouri 6-4 in the second game of a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association doubleheader here Saturday.

The Mules pulled out a last-inning 3-2 win in the opener before the Bronchos rebounded in the nightcap to snap a five-game losing streak, improving to 11-15 overall and 7-11 in the league.  The two teams wrap up the four-game series with a single nine-inning contest at 1 p.m. Sunday.

"We scrapped all day long as a team and we felt good about the effort our players gave today," head coach Dax Leone said.  "Effort and energy are the only things you can control in the game of baseball and we'll take that all day long."

Central Missouri took a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning of the second game, but UCO went ahead to stay with its big second inning volley.

Isaac Hellbusch started the inning with a double, Dylan Tinkler followed with a single and a walk to Josh Ingram loaded the bases.  Ethan Elroy drove in Hellbusch with a single and Hatcher cleared the bases with his sixth homer of the season, a shot to right field that gave the Bronchos a 5-3 lead.

The Mules led off the fourth with a solo homer to pull within 5-4, but UCO got that run back in the sixth on Chris Labato's sacrifice fly.

Brent Backlund started on the mound and went the first six innings to earn the win.  The junior right-hander retired nine straight batters after giving up the fourth inning homer and allowed six hits while striking out four in improving to 3-1.

Reliever Tanner Ferrell came on in the seventh to close out the game and earned his second save with a dominating effort, striking out the first two batters he faced before ending the game with a routine groundout.

Elroy had two of UCO's nine hits.

The Bronchos also got a fine pitching effort in the first game from Daulton Leiker, who took the tough loss despite giving up just four hits with six strikeouts in a complete-game, 114-pitch outing.

Central Missouri scored single runs in the first and third to take a 2-0 lead, with UCO pulling even in the fifth on two-out RBI hits by Jacob Borrego and Dilon Argo.

It stayed that way until the bottom of the seventh when the Mules pulled out the win with a walk-off run-scoring single.

Argo collected two of UCO's eight hits.
