Mules Get Past UCO In Series Finale

WARRENSBURG, Mo. (March 29) – Central Oklahoma put two runners on base in its final at bat but couldn't push across the tying runs and dropped a 4-2 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association decision to Central Missouri here Sunday.

It was the finale of a four-game series between the two teams, with the Bronchos losing three in falling to 11-16 overall and 7-12 in the league.

"Our players compete well in every game, but in the end it's another 1-3 conference weekend," head coach Dax Leone said.  "We once again had chances, especially in the top of the ninth with our first two guys on with no outs.  We feel like our players are in the right situations to have success, but we just haven't been consistent enough in those areas.

"As the head coach of this program, I take full responsibility for our 7-12 record in MIAA play."

Josh Ingram drew a walk to lead off the top of the ninth and Ethan Elroy followed with a single to put UCO in prime position to tie the game, but the Mules recorded two strikeouts and a groundout to end the game.

Central Missouri scored twice in the second and single runs in the fourth and five to take a 4-0 lead, while the Bronchos stranded two runners in scoring position in the second and left the bases loaded in the fifth.

UCO finally got on the scoreboard in the eighth.  Tyler Hatcher led off with a single, but was out at second base on fielder's choice that put Jake O'Brien on first before Isaac Hellbusch drilled his seventh home run of the season to trim the deficit to 4-2.

Hatcher and Hellbusch had two hits apiece to lead the offense.  Five pitchers saw action for UCO, with Rande Revilla coming on to get the Bronchos out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth with a strikeout and groundout.

UCO goes to Arlington Baptist for a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday.
