Lions Hold Off UCO

FORT SMITH, Ark. (Feb. 7) – Arkansas-Fort Smith an early lead for the second straight game and went on to down Central Oklahoma 5-4 here Saturday afternoon.
 
The Lions, who jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the second inning of Friday's 12-4 victory, went on top 3-0 in the opening frame and fended off the Bronchos the rest of the way.
 
The two teams wrap up the three-day, three-game series at 1 p.m. Sunday.
 
"We were not ready to play today and they punched us in the mouth again," head coach Dax Leone said.  "We just basically played free baseball and never gave ourselves a chance.  We've struck out 23 times in 18 innings and that will get you beat at any level, especially college baseball."
 
UAFS took advantage of two hits and two errors in pushing across three runs in its initial at bat against ace Ricky Reeves and never trailed.
 
UCO got a run back in the third on Isaac Hellbusch's run-scoring single before the Lions pushed across two more in the fourth to extend their lead to 5-1.
 
Hellbusch delivered again in the fifth with a two-run double that pulled the Bronchos within 5-3 and Dilon Argo's RBI single in the eighth made it 5-4, but UCO couldn't pull even.
 
Josh Ingram and Hellbusch had two hits apiece for the Bronchos.
