UCO Drops Series Finale To Lions

Box Score

FORT SMITH, Ark. (Feb. 8) –
Arkansas-Fort Smith scored five unanswered runs to rally past Central Oklahoma 9-7 and complete a season-opening three-game sweep of the Bronchos.

UCO went in front 7-4 in the top of the sixth inning, but the Lions made it 7-6 with two runs in the bottom of that frame before taking the lead with two more in the seventh and adding an insurance run in the eighth.

"Our guys played the game the right way today and that's the expectation, win or lose," head coach Dax Leone said.  "Obviously we still didn't execute consistently, but we have time to fix it.

"Baseball is a tough sport when you lose momentum and that happened to us all weekend."

The Bronchos managed 10 hits in the series finale, getting two apiece from Isaac Hellbusch, Brad McDonald, Ethan Elroy and Jacob Borrego.  Hellbusch drove in three runs and Borrego two.

UCO manufactured a run to take a 1-0 lead in the second when McDonald singled, went to second on a walk to Elroy and advanced to third on Tyler Hatcher's fly out before scoring on a wild pitch.

UAFS came back with a grand slam in the fourth inning to go on top 4-1, but the Bronchos answered right back with four runs of their own in the top of the fifth to regain the lead.

Hellbusch had the big blow with his second homer of the weekend, this one a three-run blast, and Borrego added an RBI single.

UCO added two runs in the top of the sixth to make it 7-4, getting run-scoring singles from Elroy and Borrego.

The Bronchos go to Hays, Kan. next week for three games in the Fort Hays State Festival.
