ADA, Okla. (Feb. 27) – Hitting woes and fielding problems led to pair of Lone Star Conference losses for Central Oklahoma here Friday afternoon as the Bronchos dropped a doubleheader to East Central.
UCO managed just four hits in a 5-1 first-game defeat and then had six errors lead to 10 unearned runs for the Tigers in a 12-5 second-game setback.
The Bronchos fell to 6-9 on the year and 3-7 in the LSC with the losses, while ECU improved to 6-7 and 5-5. The two teams meet again Sunday for a 12:30 p.m. doubleheader in Edmond, a twinbill that was originally scheduled for Saturday.
UCO scored its lone run of the opener in the second inning to tie it 1-1 when Luke Yost reached on an error, went to second when Brent Hodge was hit by pitch, took third on John Bryant's sacrifice bunt and scored on a sacrifice fly by Wade Gordy.
The Tigers broke that deadlock with four runs in the fourth to take a 5-1 lead en route to the win.
Blake Mitchell had two of UCO's four hits.
The Bronchos scored three runs in the second and third innings of the nightcap to overcome an early 1-0 deficit, but ECU used error-filled scoring outbursts in the fourth and seventh to put the game away.
Andrew Foshee had a two-run single in the second to put UCO on top and the Bronchos made it 3-1 in the third on Hodge's RBI groundout that followed consecutive singles by Nate Mitani, Casey Bruns and Bryant.
ECU took advantage of two errors in a four-run fourth to take a 5-3 lead and UCO had three fielding miscues in a seven-run seventh that made it 12-3. The Bronchos got two runs back in the top of the eighth, but it wasn't nearly enough.
Foshee went 3-for-4 to lead UCO's 11-hit attack, while Mitchell and Bryant had two hits apiece.
