Bronchos Sweep Newman In Historic Fashion

Central Oklahoma Wins 27-3 Saturday In Edmond

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma finished off a three-game sweep of Newman in historic fashion Saturday afternoon, winning the MIAA series finale 27-3.

UCO improve to 20-19 with the win and is now 11-14 in the MIAA. The Bronchos continue an eight-game homestand with four more next week, beginning Tuesday against Rogers State and wrapping up with a three-game series against Arkansas Fort Smith next weekend.

Saturday at Wendell Simmons Field, the Bronchos scored the fourth-most runs in a single game in school history. The 27 were the most since April 2023 at Oklahoma Christian (26 runs). Central's 26 RBIs are also the fourth most in a single game in school history and the eight doubles hit Saturday are the fifth most in a single game.

Drake Lee went 5-for-7 with three doubles and six RBIs. The senior's seven ABs tied a school record and his five hits and three doubles were each one shy of tying the respective school records. Caleb Castle was 2-for-4 and drew three walks. He scored five runs, also one shy of a UCO record.

Lee got the scoring started early with an RBI double in the top of the first inning. Colton Ayres scored on the play and the Bronchos led 1-0. Newman responded though with a solo homer in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game.

Then the Bronchos opened it up.

UCO scored seven in the second. Ayres had a sacrifice-fly to score Elijah Alexander, Lee's RBI single scored Cade Mills, and then Haden O'Toole's three-RBI double scored Noah Smallwood, Lee, and Castle. Mills returned later in the inning and drew a bases-loaded walk that scored O'Toole, and then Gage Gilchrist scored on a wild pitch to make it 8-1.

In the third, Lee added to it again with an RBI double to score Castle and then Alexander hit a grand slam to left field and pushed the UCO lead to 13-1.

After Newman hit a pair of solo homers in the fourth, the Bronchos continued the offensive onslaught in with another seven-run frame in the fifth.

Ayres, Lee, and Gilchrist all had RBI base hits, there were two bases-loaded walks, and another RBI groundout. Gilchrist's single scored two and gave the Bronchos a 20-3 lead.

Lee, Luke Stout, and Gilchrist added to it in the sixth, pushing the UCO lead to 24-3. Carson Taylor hit a two-run homer in the seventh and Smallwood's RBI double later in the inning scored Castle to make it 27-3.

Logan Taylor got the start for the Bronchos and the win after throwing 4.0 innings. He gave up three runs on three hits – all solo home runs. He struck out seven batters.

Trent Gerber struck out three in the fifth, Michael Lopez got two flyouts and a groundout in the sixth, and Gage Norvell got a pair of groundouts and a strikeout in the seventh to end the game. Gerber and Lopez allowed one hit each and Norvel a walk and two hit batters, but Newman couldn't get any more runs across the board.

Central Oklahoma hosts Rogers State on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Wendell Simmons Field. The Bronchos are looking to for a win in that month-long series and avoid the three-game sweep against RSU, which is in first place in the MIAA. The Bronchos will then host UAFS (4-33, 3-25 MIAA) for their three-game league series beginning next Friday.
