EDMOND – Central Oklahoma earned a 12-5 Game 2 win Friday over Newman to clinch the MIAA series at Wendell Simmons Field.

UCO improved to 19-19 overall on the season with the win and is now 10-14 in MIAA play. The Bronchos will look for a series sweep on Saturday at noon in Game 3.

Kade Sheldon gave UCO a 3-0 lead with one swing of the bat in the top of the second inning and Drake Lee added an RBI groundout to score Colton Ayres later in the inning to put the Bronchos up 4-0. Newman then stormed back and took a 5-4 lead in the fourth inning, but then the UCO bullpen shut it down.

Kamden Thompson got the start and gave up the five runs in 3.2 innings. Cortt Gentry followed and got UCO out of the fourth and then recorded two more outs in the fifth inning before the Bronchos went to Chase Yarger. The junior threw the final 4.1, striking out five batters. Newman had 11 hits in the game and just three after the fourth inning.

Noah Smallwood led UCO at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a double, two RBIs, and three runs scored. Caleb Castle, Lee, Trevor Rowe, and Sheldon all had two hits in the game. Castle, Lee, Smallwood, and Elijah Alexander all hit doubles.

Smallwood walked with one out in the second and Alexander doubled to right field before Sheldon's three-run home run made it 3-0. Ayres walked after that and Castle doubled down the right field line before Lee's RBI groundout made it 4-0.

Rowe led off the fifth with an infield single and advanced to second on Carson Taylor's groundout. Rowe scored on Smallwood's double to left to tie the game, 5-5. After Alexander drew a walk, Sheldon singled up the middle to score Smallwood and give the Bronchos the go-ahead run and a 6-5 lead.

In the sixth, Lee and Rowe led off with singles and Taylor walked to load the bases. Smallwood hit a sacrifice-fly to center to score Lee and make it 7-5.

Alexander hit a sac-fly in the eighth to score Taylor. Haden O'Toole and Smallwood then both scored scored on a throwing error when Sheldon was attempting a sac-bunt. Sheldon reached and moved to third. He would score on an Ayres groundout and UCO led 11-5 after eight.

Sheldon hit a sac-fly in the ninth to score Taylor, who walked for a third time in the game to lead off the inning. His run made it the final, 12-5.

UCO has two series wins this season. The other came against Fort Hays State two weeks ago and it was also a 3-0 sweep. The Bronchos will look to replicate that Saturday.

Central is home again on Tuesday to wrap up its series with Rogers State and then also hosts Arkansas Fort Smith next weekend at Wendell Simmons Field.
