UCO Opens Newman Series With Win

Central Oklahoma Tops NU Jets 5-2 Thursday In Edmond

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma opened its MIAA series against Newman with a 5-2 win on Thursday at Wendell Simmons Field.

UCO improved to 18-19 overall on the season with the win and is now 9-14 in the MIAA. The series was originally scheduled to be played in Wichita, Kansas before field conditions forced the shift to Edmond, so the Bronchos are playing this series as the visiting team. The series was adjust a second time due to expected weather this weekend.

Normally the Friday starter, Danny Satterlee took the mound on Thursday and was dominant for the Bronchos – striking out a season-high eight batters in 7.0 innings of work. Satterlee did give up eight hits, including a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning, but he didn't walk any batters. The junior right-hander got six flyouts, six groundouts including one double play, and the eight Ks.

Mylan Childers threw 1.1 innings out of the bullpen and all four outs he recorded were strikeouts. He gave up one run on four hits. Brody Berlowitz got the save with a 0.2-inning outing. He entered the game with two on and the tying run at the plate. He got a flyout and a strikeout to end it.

Colton Ayres hit a ground-rule double to left center on the third pitch of the game and while UCO didn't score in the first, he set the tone for a 10-hit game for the Bronchos.

Drake Lee led off the fourth with a single and after moving to second on Carson Taylor's sacrifice bunt, Trevor Rowe cleared the bases with a home run to left field that gave the Bronchos a 2-0 lead. After the second out of the inning, Elijah Alexander followed with a solo homer, taking a 1-2 pitch out to left field to make it 3-0.

After Newman got a solo homer in the bottom of the fifth, Haden O'Toole led off the sixth with a home run to right field on the first pitch of the inning to give the Bronchos a 4-1 lead.

UCO added its final run in the top of the ninth. Solomon Skalnik led off with a walk, Lee was hit by a pitch, and Taylor also drew a walk to load the bases. After a pitching change, Rowe then grounded into a double play, but Skalnik's run went on the board and made it 5-1.

Newman led off the ninth with a double, then hit a one-out single and followed with an RBI double to make it 5-2. That's when Berlowitz showed up to close out the game.

UCO and Newman will play again on Friday at 2 p.m. Game 3 is scheduled for Saturday at 12 p.m. With the Bronchos moving this series to Edmond and despite playing as the visitor in the game, this weekend extends a home streak for UCO to eight games. Central hosts Rogers State and Arkansas Fort Smith next week to wrap up the homestand.
