Central Trips In Home Loss

Bronchos Fall 3-0 Tuesday In Edmond

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma dropped its second game to Northeastern State with a 3-0 setback Tuesday afternoon at Wendell Simmons Field.

UCO is 17-19 overall and 8-14 in the MIAA. The Bronchos will visit NSU (13-21, 8-14) in two weeks to finish the month-long series.

On the second pitch of game, Northeastern State's Klete Finley hit a home run to left center. While NSU racked up 10 hits, the early run did not indicate how the game would go. Tuesday's game turned into a defensive dual.

The Bronchos did give up 10 hits, but only the three runs. Central used three pitchers beginning with Bron Farr (L, 2-2), who threw 3.0 innings and gave up the first two runs on four hits. He struck out two batters in the start.

Zack Hudspeth came out of the bullpen and threw 4.0 innings, giving up one run on four hits and a walk. He struck out five batters. Cortt Gentry struck out three over the final 2.0 innings and only allowed two hits and a pair of walks.

UCO's offense unfortunately could not give its pitching the help. The Bronchos didn't record their first hit of the game until the bottom of the seventh inning.

Carson Taylor finally broke through and did so right after a Drake Lee walk to put two on with one out. UCO was a swing away from tying the game but Elijah Alexander and Gage Gilchrist both got out and though NSU lost a combined no-hitter late in the game, it kept the shutout.

UCO got two more in a last-effort rally in the ninth. Colton Ayres led off with a walk and Lee singled to follow. In an unfortunate twist, As Trevor Rowe reaches on a fielder's choice after that to put runners on the corners with one out, Lee was called for interference on the play. Both Rowe and Lee were out and Ayres was ordered back to second.

Taylor got his second hit of the game after that to once again give the Bronchos a chance at a tie, but Alexander struck out to end the game – the ninth of the game for Central – and UCO was left with the shutout.

With Tuesday's result, UCO and NSU are tied for ninth place in the MIAA standings with one month left to play. The top 10 teams qualify for the MIAA Baseball Championship May 6-9 at Wendell Simmons Field in Edmond.

The Bronchos have Newman, Arkansas Fort Smith, and Central Missouri at home, while visiting Northwest Missouri to end the regular season. UCO also hosts Rogers State and visits Northeastern State to wrap up those two series.

This weekend's series with Newman was originally scheduled for Wichita but moved to Edmond due to field conditions and NU will play as the home team. Another change was made due to weather, with the series beginning Thursday at 2 p.m. Game 2 is scheduled for Friday at 2 p.m. and Game 3 Saturday at noon. Any additional changes made to the schedule will be shared on bronchosports.com.
