Central Falls In Regular Season Finale

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. - The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team dropped its final regular season game Saturday, 7-5, at Northeastern State.

The Bronchos finished the regular season 22-18 overall and 16-14 in the MIAA. Central will be the sixth-seed in the conference tournament next weekend. UCO will travel to third-seeded Missouri Southern for a best-of-three series to open the postseason beginning Friday at 3 p.m.

The MIAA's tournament format was adjusted this season. The top four teams are hosting the next four in best-of-three series on campus sites. The four advancing teams will meet up in Joplin, Mo. at MSSU for a double-elimination tournament to determine the league champion.

Central Oklahoma fell behind Saturday early and a valiant rally late in the game was nearly enough, but NSU put the Bronchos away in the end.

Philip Scott, Garrett Takamatsu and Joe Mondragon each had two hits for the Bronchos, who scattered nine in the game.

Kyle Crowl and Shane Nixon each had one hit and both were home runs.

UCO struck first, with Takamatsu plating Scott in the top of the third inning. Scott doubled in front of Takamatsu.

NSU answered back though, scoring one in the bottom of the third, two in the bottom of the fourth, and three more in the bottom of the fifth.

UCO got one back in the top of the sixth on Nixon's solo homer. That made it 7-2.

UCO made its last rally in the top of the seventh, adding three more to cut into the deficit.

Takmatsu picked up another RBI, scoring Ryan Harrel with a single to left center. Crowl then smacked his team-leading 11th home run of the season to score Takamatsu and himself and make it 7-5.

Brayden Nelson got the start for the Bronchos and the senior right-hander from Piedmont, Oklahoma threw four innings, allowing three runs on five hits. He also struck out three batters.

UCO used seven pitchers in the game. Jake Terry allowed three runs on two hits in the fifth but didn't record an out. Blake Bautz got UCO out of the fifth with three outs. Colton Croft threw 2/3 of an inning in the sixth and Grant Larson came in to replace him, but gave up one run on one hit and his day was done.

Lawson Isaacs threw 2/3 of an inning in the seventh and Beaux Bonvillain finished off the game with 1 2/3 innings of work. Isaacs struck out one batter and Bonvillain struck out four.
