Central Oklahoma Drops Game 1 At MSSU

JOPLIN, Mo. – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team dropped Game 1 of its best-of-three series at Missouri Southern 5-3 Friday afternoon in the opening round of the 2021 MIAA Baseball Championship.

Game 2 is scheduled for Saturday at 3 p.m.

Philip Scott gave UCO an early 1-0 lead. Leading off, the senior infielder drew a walk. He then moved to second on a throwing error by the MSSU pitcher and advanced to third before a second error on the same play allowed Scott to score and put the Bronchos in front early.

Southern answered back with one in the bottom of the first – a bases loaded RBI single – and one more in the bottom of the second on a solo homer to go ahead 2-1.

After Southern stretched its lead to 5-1, the Bronchos made a game of it late.

Kyle Crowl led off the eighth with a double before Joe Mondragon was hit by a pitch. A double down the left field line from Shane Nixon scored Crowl to make it 5-2. Kameron Kilchrist followed that with an RBI groundout to third base that scored Mondragon to make it 5-3.

UCO had one last chance in the ninth. Garrett Takamatsu drew a two-out walk, but Crowl, representing the tying run, struck out after that to end the game.

Luke Anderson got the start for the Bronchos Friday. The junior right-hander went six innings, allowing two runs on six hits and three walks. Anderson did strike out five in his outing.

Kyler Patterson threw 2/3 of an inning and allowed three runs on three hits. Beaux Bonvillain replaced Patterson in the seventh and got UCO to the ninth with still a chance.

Central Oklahoma will now turn its attention to a win or go home Game 2, scheduled for Saturday at 3 p.m.
