Bronchos Extend Season With Win Over Washburn

Central Oklahoma Beats Washburn 5-3 In MIAA Baseball Championship First Round

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma extended its season for at least one more day with a 5-3 win over Washburn in the MIAA Baseball Championship first round game at Wendell Simmons Field.

UCO improved to 27-24 with the win. The Bronchos advance to the quarterfinals of the MIAA's postseason tournament and will face regular season champion and No. 1 seed Pittsburg State Thursday at 1 p.m.

Danny Satterlee threw 8 1/3 innings in a dominant start to pace the Bronchos. The junior right-hander gave up three runs on 11 hits and recorded five strikeouts. His 8.1 innings pitched is a career high. Satterlee got nine groundouts, including two double plays, and seven flyouts to go with his 5 Ks. The Bronchos also caught two Washburn runners attempting to steal bases.

Satterlee gave up three runs and two of them were in the first inning. Washburn hit a one-out double and followed with back-to-back singles, the second scoring a run to make it 1-0. The Ichabods added a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0.

The Bronchos then scored three unearned runs in the top of the third inning to take the lead.

Colton Ayres led off reaching on a throwing error by the Washburn shortstop. Luke Stout moved him to second with a sac-bunt, and after Carson Taylor drew a walk, Trevor Rowe loaded the bases with an infield single.

Haden O'Toole grounded out to first to score Ayres, then Elijah Alexander hit a two-RBI single to center field to score Taylor and Rowe and give the Bronchos a 3-2 lead.

Alexander, who went 4-for-4 in the game with four singles, scored Rowe for the second time in the top of the fifth to give the Bronchos a 4-2 lead.

The game stayed that way all the way to the ninth inning. O'Toole scored Stout with a sac-fly to make it 5-2. Washburn led off the bottom half of the inning with a double and after a one-out single scored the leadoff to make it 5-2, Satterlee's day was done.

Chase Yarger came out of the bullpen and although he gave up a single to put two on in the ninth, he earned a save after striking out the next batter and getting a 6-3 groundout to end the game.

UCO collected 12 hits in the game. Ayres, Taylor, and Rowe all had two. Stout and Gage Gilchrist had one each. Alexander had a third of the team's hits with his 4-for-4 day.

Central Oklahoma and Washburn tied for eighth place in the MIAA, with Washburn earning the No. 8 seed in the postseason tournament by winning 2 of 3 in Edmond against the Bronchos in March. UCO avenged that early series setback with Wednesday's win.

The Bronchos now face Pittsburg State, which is ranked No. 5 in the country in this week's ABCA Coaches' Poll. The Gorillas are 40-9 on the season and went 27-9 in the MIAA to win the regular season title for the first time in school history.

No. 7 seed Missouri Western beat No. 10 seed Fort Hays State earlier Wednesday. With Wednesday's first round games complete, the quarterfinals are set. No. 4 Northwest Missouri and No. 5 Central Missouri, as well as No. 3 Missouri Southern and No. 6 Emporia State, were already scheduled. No. 2 Rogers State will face Missouri Western and Pitt State and UCO make up the other quarterfinals.

Central Oklahoma won the 2025 MIAA Baseball Championship for the first time in school history. The Bronchos were the No. 4 seed last season and went 3-0 on the weekend to claim the crown.

Following Thursday's marathon quarterfinal round, the final four squads will compete in the semifinals on Friday afternoon with the MIAA Baseball Championship final scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m.
