Bronchos Fall To Oklahoma Christian

OKLAHOMA CITY (April 6) – Central Oklahoma failed to get its offense untracked and five pitchers had trouble holding down Oklahoma Christian as the Bronchos dropped a 15-7 non-conference decision Tuesday night at Dobson Field.

The Bronchos scored six of their runs in the third inning to briefly take a 6-5 lead, but OC outscored UCO 10-1 the rest of the way to pick up its seventh straight win.

Central, which beat the Eagles 20-0 at home three weeks ago, fell to 12-10 on the season. OC improved to 15-9.

"We had plenty of opportunities to score more runs and just didn't capitalize," head coach John Martin said. "And obviously we didn't do a very good job on the mound. We just need to move on and get ready for this weekend."

The Bronchos return to Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play Saturday with a 1 p.m. home doubleheader against Northwest Missouri, with the third game of the series set for Sunday.

UCO finished with eight hits and had plenty of scoring chances while also drawing nine walks, but ended up leaving 12 runners on base. Shane Nixon, Brett Hopkins and Cacy Harper led the way with two hits apiece.

The Bronchos gave up three home runs in the first two innings in falling behind 5-0 only to use the long ball themselves to take the lead in the third.

Philip Scott started that big six-run uprising by reaching on a one-out error and Kyle Crowl walked before Nixon parked his first career UCO homer over the left field fence.

Joe Mondragon kept things going by drawing a two-out walk and Hopkins singled to right field to set up Harper, who crushed a no-doubt blast to left field to put Central on top 6-5.

The Bronchos upped the lead in the fifth on Philip Scott's one-out RBI single to center field that scored Hopkins, who had opened the inning with a single through the left side.

It was a short-lived lead, however, as OC came back with five two-out runs in the bottom of that frame to move back in front 10-7.

The Eagles pushed that to a 12-7 advantage in the sixth, added three more runs in the seventh and UCO had no answer.
