Central Sweeps Missouri Western

EDMOND - The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team swept Missouri Western Sunday, taking Game 3 of the MIAA series 6-5 at Wendell Simmons Field.

Central improved to 18-14 with the win and is now 13-11 in MIAA play.

Garrett Takamatsu slapped a ground-rule double down the left field line to leadoff the bottom of the second inning. A pair of groundouts to second base followed and Takamatsu scored on the second one by Bennett Laurence to give Central an early 1-0 lead.

In the third, after Ryan Harrel singled up the middle, Shane Nixon then pelted a two-run home run to left field to give Central a 3-0 lead.

After MWSU got on the board with two in the top of the fifth, UCO had an answer in the bottom half.

Kyle Crowl smashed an RBI double off the wall in left to score Philip Scott. Then Takamatsu hit one in the same direction but got it over the wall in left to score himself and Crowl and give UCO a 6-2 lead.

Brayden Nelson got the start for the Bronchos Sunday and the senior was solid, throwing three no-hit innings and keeping MWSU scoreless through four innings. He allowed two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out seven in five innings of work.

Colton Croft struck out three in 1 2/3 innings of relief work, allowing one run on two hits. Kyler Patterson struck out one of two batters he faced and Jake Terry also came out of the bullpen, allowing two runs on one hit and a walk. He also struck out one batter in 1/3 of an inning of work.

Beaux Bonvillain came in for Terry after a MWSU home run made the game 6-5. Bonvillain got out of the eighth and through the ninth to earn the save. A strikeout on the final at bat put an exclamation point on the victory.

Crowl finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and Takamatsu was also 2-for-3 with two RBIs and one run scored. Nixon had one hit as did Harrel.

Central Oklahoma will face Oklahoma Baptist this Tuesday in a non-conference game at Wendell Simmons Field. The Bronchos will then spend next weekend in Claremore, Oklahoma for a three-game MIAA series with Rogers State.
