Broncho Rally Comes Up Short

EDMOND – Down three with runners on first and third, Shane Nixon drove a ball deep to left field with two outs in the bottom of the ninth Tuesday, but the shot hit off the top of the wall and stayed in play. The result a two-RBI double. Central Oklahoma's Philip Scott popped up a 3-2 pitch in the next at bat and Oklahoma Baptist beat UCO 6-5.

"We really battled at the end and I'm proud of our guys for not giving up," UCO head coach John Martin said. "I really thought Shane's ball was out of here. He hit it so hard. But the guys battled and Oklahoma Baptist is a good team. Now we got to move on to the next one."

Central Oklahoma trailed 6-2 entering the ninth. Kameron Kilchrist led off with a four-pitch walk and after Bennett Laurence struck out, Carson Green got a free base after the 6-foot-4 junior catch was hit in the back of the head with an errant pitch.

Zac Freeman followed with a walk of his own. But he would be out when Ryan Harrel reached on a fielder's choice to shortstop. OBU got the force out at second but Kilchrist scored on the play to make it 6-3 with two outs.

Nixon was 0-for-4 before stepping to the plate in the ninth. He had Green on third and Harrel on first. He turned on a 2-1 pitch and drove in both runners with the off the wall punch to left.

Scott battled to a full count before popping up to first. The senior infielder had two doubles and a single in the game already.

Colton Croft took the loss for the Bronchos. Lawson Isaacs got the start and allowed just one run in three innings of work and that came on a leadoff homer from OBU.

Croft took over in the fourth and was solid through 1 2/3, but hit a snag with two outs in the fifth and OBU put up four runs in the inning to take a 5-1 lead.

Grant Larson threw one inning behind Croft and also allowed one run. Zach Moore (1.1), Owen Logan (0.1), Blake Bautz (1.0) and Ethan Wayland (0.2) also pitched Tuesday and combined to hold OBU scoreless over the final 3 1/3 innings.

UCO, now 18-15 on the season, will return to MIAA play this weekend when the Bronchos visit Rogers State. Central's final home game of the 2021 season is scheduled for next Tuesday against Oklahoma Christian.
