Central Drops Opener At Missouri Southern

JOPLIN, Mo. – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team dropped the series opener against Missouri Southern Friday, with the Bronchos falling 5-2.

UCO is scheduled to play a doubleheader Saturday to wrap up the three-game MIAA series beginning at 1 p.m.

"We didn't do enough to put the ball in play and against a good team we weren't sharp enough," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "We did have some guys step up and we them to do that and we need a few more guys to do that too."

Central Oklahoma got an early lead and in a hurry Friday afternoon. Colton Bertus singled a full-count pitch through the left side to lead off in the top of the first. He moved to second on a throwing error and over to third on a Joe Mondragon groundout. Moments later, a wild pitch got lost behind the Missouri Southern catcher and Bertus scored to put the Bronchos ahead, 1-0.

Central went down 2-1 in the third inning, but Brett Hopkins tied the game with a two-out double in the top of the fourth inning. With one out, Philip Scott reached on a fielder's choice – Kyle Crowl was out on that play after a single. Scott then moved to second on a wild pitch before Hopkins smacked a double to left field to tie the game, 2-2.

But the Bronchos didn't score again.

Missouri Southern went back in front 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning, then added two late runs in the seventh to take the game.

Bertus, Crowl, and Hopkins each had two hits for the Bronchos Friday. Bertus went 2-for-4 with the one run scored. Crowl went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles. And Hopkins went 2-for-4 with a single and a RBI-double.

Garrett Takamatsu also had a double in the game to give the Bronchos seven hits in the game.

Luke Anderson got the start for the Bronchos and threw four innings Friday. He struck out three batters but gave up three runs on six hits and two walks.

Brayden Nelson threw three innings of relief work and gave up two runs on three hits and a walk. That after retiring each of the first seven batters he faced.

Lawson Isaacs threw 1/3 of an inning and only allowed a double. Brady Smith finished off the game with 2/3 of an inning and also allowed one hit.
