Central Dismantles OC

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team scored early and often Tuesday night as the Bronchos obliterated Oklahoma Christian 20-0 at Wendell Simmons Field.

"That was a good win and games like this are confidence builders," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "Once the guys start hitting the ball well and helps them get going better and our pitchers to perform like they did was great too."

Central Oklahoma's four person pitching staff threw a one-hitter Tuesday night, a first for UCO since 2019. The 20 runs scored by Central are the most since April of 2018.

Colton Bertus got the evening started for the Bronchos. The redshirt freshman second baseman smashed a triple off the wall in left center. After Joe Mondragon drew a walk, Kyle Crowl turned the scoreboard on with a three-run home run to right center and the Bronchos were off and running.

Garrett Takamatsu followed Crowl with a solo home run to make it 4-0. Philip Scott also scored on a passed ball in the first inning and Brett Hopkins stole home to make it 6-0.

In the third, the top of the UCO lineup was at it again. Bertus was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and that scored Brendan Ezell. Mondragon then pelted a single up the middle that scored Bennett Laurence and Ryan Harrel.

Then Crowl was up again. And just like in the first inning, the senior shortstop connected and lasered a ball out of the park to center field. Crowl scored Mondragon and Bertus and gave UCO a 12-0 lead.

Next up was Takamatsu, and just like in the first, the catcher followed Crowl with another solo home run and UCO led 13-0.

Central added five more in the bottom of the fourth. Crowl earned his seventh RBI of the game with a bases loaded walk before Takamatsu tripled with the bases loaded to score Crowl as well as Mondragon and Bertus. Takamatsu later scored on a fielder's choice when Hopkins hit a ground ball to third base. UCO led 18-0 after four.

Laurence scored again in the fifth when Mason Carrier grounded out to second base. Blake Adams also scored when Shane Nixon singled to center in the fifth.

About that pitching staff.

Brayden Nelson got the start for Central and threw three perfect innings, striking out three batters in the effort. Colton Croft then threw two innings and he struck out two batters. Croft also allowed the only hit of the game for OC, a single to up the middle in the top of the fourth inning.

Jake Terry threw one inning and struck out the side in the top of the sixth. And Owen Logan made an appearance and got a 1-2-3 inning in the seventh to give Central Oklahoma the victory.

Central only put together 11 hits in scoring 20 runs Tuesday. Bertus, Crowl and Takamatsu each had multiple hits.

Takamatsu led UCO, going 3-for-5 with two home runs and a triple. He finished with five RBIs and three runs scored. Crowl went 2-for-3 with two home runs, a walk, and seven RBIs and three runs scored. Bertus was 2-for-3 with a triple and a single, one RBI and he also scored three runs.

Central Oklahoma will return to MIAA play this weekend. The Bronchos visit Joplin, Mo. for a three-game series against Missouri Southern beginning Friday afternoon. The two schools will play a doubleheader Saturday.
