UCO Drops Series Opener In Kansas

EMPORIA, Kan. – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team dropped the series-opener at Emporia State Thursday, falling 5-1 in the first of two games on the day.

Central Oklahoma is 4-4 after the loss and has a 2-2 record in MIAA play.

The Bronchos struggled at the plate Thursday, only recording four hits and didn't help matters on defense, committing seven errors in the game.

Philip Scott and Kyle Crowl both had base knocks for Central. Scott's came in the seventh inning with a single to third base. He then reached second on an ESU error when Crowl grounded to third and reached on the fielder's choice. Scott scored on another Hornet error when Brett Hopkins grounded to third.

Crowl also had a two-out single in the fourth with Joe Mondragon already on base after drawing a walk, but the Bronchos couldn't produce behind him. He followed Hopkins's single in the top of the ninth with his second hit of the game but UCO again couldn't get the offense going.

Luke Anderson got the start for the Bronchos and threw five innings. He allowed four runs, although only one earned run, and struck out eight batters. Lawson Issacs threw three innings and allowed one run on two hits. He added one strikeout.

Game 2 was scheduled for 5 p.m. The Bronchos will also play Emporia State Friday afternoon to wrap up the MIAA series.
