Central Opens Fort Hays Series With Shutout Victory

HAYS, Kan. – The 15th-ranked University of Central Oklahoma baseball team beat Fort Hays State 3-0 Friday afternoon in the first of three Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association matchups at Larks Park.

Central Oklahoma improved to 14-3 on the season with the win, its fourth in a row and 11th in 12 games.

"We got after them early today and that helped and it helped that our pitching staff was on today too," UCO head coach John Martin said. "Our pitchers have been good for us so far and they were today and our guys gave them the support they needed. Now we need to focus on winning the series this weekend."

Central Oklahoma wasted no time getting going Friday. The Bronchos scored one run on three hits in the first inning, one more run on three more hits in the second, and a third run in the fourth inning.

All three came on sacrifice flies. Philip Scott scored Zac Freeman, who earlier singled, in the top of the first. Colton Bertus scored Dru Barrier, who singled, in the second. And Freeman then scored Ryan Harrel, who also singled but advanced to third on a error, in the fourth inning.

Dylan Hall got the start for the Bronchos Friday and the senior righty was solid. Hall struck out nine in seven innings of work, allowing five hits and just one walk. Hall picked up the win on the day to improve to 4-1 on the season. His nine strikeouts increased his season total to 45 Ks in just 30 innings of work.

Kyler Patterson came on in relief of Hall and struck out the side in the eighth. He now has 19 strikeouts in 10 1/3 innings. Beaux Bonvillain earned the save for throwing a 1-2-3 ninth inning. He now has two saves on the year.

Freeman led UCO at the plate Friday, going 3-for-3 with two singles and a double, plus the RBI from his sac-fly in the fourth. Garrett Takamatsu went 2-for-4 with two singles. Bertus was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Barrier, Bennett Laurence, and Harrel all had one hits on the day.

Central Oklahoma and Fort Hays State will play Game 2 of the series Saturday at 1 p.m., then wrap up the three-game series Sunday at 1 p.m.
