Central Drops Two

EDMOND (Feb. 15) – Offense was hard to come by for Central Oklahoma Saturday as the Bronchos dropped two games on the second day of the UCO Softball Classic.

Central managed just eight hits on the day, falling to Chadron State 3-0 in the opener before losing 8-3 to Lubbock Christian. The Bronchos, now 8-8 on the season, finish the three-day event Sunday with a 2 p.m. contest against St. Edward's.

"We're struggling to get anything going with our bats," head coach Cody White said. "It's not something we haven't worked on, but not much is working right now. All we can do is keep plugging along and not get discouraged."

The Chaps went ahead with a solo home run in the top of the first, scored three in the third and made it 5-0 in the sixth before UCO briefly got back in the game in the bottom of that inning with a three-run volley.

Lexy Dobson and Brighton Gilbert started things with back-to-back infield singles and Allie Eicher walked to load the bases. Amelya Huggins drew a two-out walk to force in a run and Tori Ritz followed with a line-drive single to right that scored two more, pulling the Bronchos within 5-3.

But LCU answered back with three runs of its own in the top of the seventh to put the game away.

UCO had a prime scoring chance in first after Dobson led off with an infield single, Gilbert followed with a bunt base hit and both runners advanced on Eicher's sacrifice bunt, but back-to-back groundouts squelched the threat.

The Bronchos finished with five hits, getting two each from Dobson and Gilbert.

Central had just three hits in the first-game loss to Chadron.

The Eagles grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second, added two more runs in the third and that 3-0 cushion was enough against the punchless Bronchos.

UCO had nine fly ball outs in the first four innings and didn't manage a hit until the fifth. Hazel Pomplun punched a one-out single to right field to end the hit drought, Gilbert had a two-out bunt single and Eicher walked to load the bases.

That brought up leading hitter Hazel Puempel with a chance to get the Bronchos back in the game, but her sinking line drive to left field was caught just inches off the turf to end the threat.

Pomplun had UCO's only other hit, a one-out single to center field in the seventh.

Corrina Rivas took the loss despite scattering six hits and allowing two earned runs in going the distance in the circle. The junior right-hander struck out three and didn't walk a batter in a 91-pitch outing.
