UCO Fights Off St. Edward's

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma softball team took an early 4-2 lead over St. Edward's Sunday and clamped down en route to a victory at Broncho Softball Stadium.

Central Oklahoma improved to 9-8 on the season with the win.

"We had a bad start," UCO head coach Cody White said. "That was a tough hole to put ourselves in, but they did a good job of responding and sticking with it. We still didn't play as well as we can, but we did better and most importantly, we got the win."

Central had to fight from behind early, following a first inning the Bronchos who soon like to forget. UCO committed an error at third base, first base, and catcher in the top of the first inning. A double to right center followed the miscues and gave St. Edward's a 2-0 lead early in the game.

But the Bronchos had a response. In the bottom of the first, Lexy Dobson led off with a walk before Brighton Gilbert singled to the SEU shortstop. Hazel Puempel also drew a walk and after UCO's first two outs of the inning, Halley Randolph snuck a hit through the left side of the infield that scored Dobson and Gilbert and tied the game, 2-2.

The Bronchos got out of the second unscathed, then put up another pair of runs in the bottom of the inning.  Haley Pomplun led off with a single, and Audrie Morrison followed by getting on base. She reached on throwing error by the SEU pitcher. Dobson grounded out after that, but Gilbert followed her with a single through the right side that scored Pomplun and Morrison and gave the Bronchos a 4-2 lead.

Kylee Lynch got the start for the Bronchos Sunday. The freshman shook off the start in the first inning -though neither of her runs allowed were earned – and settled in to a good afternoon. Lynch allowed only one hit in the second and the fourth, and two in the sixth, while going three-up, three-down in the third and the fifth. Lynch struck out two on the day and earned the win to improve to 5-3 on the season.

Central scattered six hits on the day. Gilbert led the Bronchos at the plate on the day, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs and one run scored. Puempel finished 1-for-1 with a single and two walks. Randolph finished 1-for-2 with two RBIs.

Central Oklahoma will continue its three-week softball festival next weekend at Broncho Stadium. UCO hosts eight schools over the three-day finale beginning Friday morning.
